Numerical Study of Hall Thruster Plume and Sputtering Erosion
نویسندگان
چکیده
Potential sputtering erosion caused by the interactions between spacecraft and plasma plume of Hall thrusters is a concern for electric propulsion. In this study, calculation model of Hall thruster’s plume and sputtering erosion is presented. The model is based on three dimensional hybrid particle-in-cell and direct simulation Monte Carlo method PIC/DSMC method which is integrated with plume-wall sputtering yield model. For low-energy heavy-ion sputtering in Hall thruster plume, the Matsunami formula for the normal incidence sputtering yield and the Yamamura angular dependence of sputtering yield are used. The validation of the simulation model is realized through comparing plume results with the measured data. Then, SPT-70’s sputtering erosion on satellite surfaces is assessed and effect ofmass flow rate on sputtering erosion is analyzed.

Erosion Measurements by Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy for the VHITAL Program
We report the use of cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS) as a diagnostic tool to study sputter erosion of the VHITAL (Very High Isp Thruster with Anode Layer) thruster. The lifetime of the VHITAL thruster is largely governed by sputter erosion of guard-rings and other critical components. The CRDS technique will be used to measure sputtered molybdenum in the plume of the thruster for various t...

Vacuum ultraviolet emission (137.9 nm) of boron neutrals sputtered from a 200 W xenon Hall thruster boron nitride insulator is evaluated as a diagnostic for real time evaluation of thruster insulator erosion. Three Hall thruster plasma control variables are examined; ion energy (discharge potential), ion flux (propellant flow), and plasma conductivity (magnetic field strength). The boron emissi...

متن کاملElectron Trajectory Simulation in Experimental Hall Thruster Fields
The correct approach to electron transport modeling in Hall thrusters is an open question in the field and is compounded by a lack of comparative studies on the relative influence of various proposed electron transport mechanisms in the thruster plume. Lacking an analytical model for transport, empirical coefficients are used in most models to reproduce major discharge parameters like the total...
متن کاملDischarge Chamber Plasma Potential Mapping of a 40-cm NEXT-type Ion Engine*
Floating emissive probe plasma potential data are presented over a two-dimensional array of locations in the discharge chamber of a 40-cm diameter ring-cusp ion thruster. The data rule out the presence of a potential-hill plasma structure downstream of the discharge cathode assembly (DCA), which has been proposed as a mechanism of high-energy ion formation leading to DCA erosion. The discharge ...
